Good Night, Sleep Tight at momstown Victoria Scholastic sponsored Tales for Tots

Good Night, Sleep Tight is perfect bedtime reading by international bestselling author, Mem Fox. In this beautifully illustrated story, the children beg their favourite babysitter to tell them nursery rhymes. The kids in the book want to hear these old rhymes again and again, and your kids will too!

For our craft we made spiders dangling from a string using beads and pipe cleaners. The kids loved doing the actions to the nursery rhymes in the storybook and then making crawling spider puppets in theme with Halloween!

Congratulations to the winner of our Scholastic book prize! Join your local momstown chapter to enjoy Tales for Tots and other great programs that connect and support local families!

momstown Victoria Scholastic Books at Sing, Rattle & Read

We gave away two great titles from Scholastic Canada at our Sing, Rattle & Read program in September. "Fox and Squirrel" by Ruth Ohi is a delightful story of two very different animals who only see their differences. Yet they become the best of friends and begin to see that they may not be so different after all!

Our baby book of the month was "Giggle!" by beloved author and illustrator Caroline Jayne Church. Our Victoria moms, babies and toddler couldn't get enough of this book, as everyone loved to press the "giggle button," which made a happy giggling sound to complement each new verse and page!

"There's no greater thing to do/Than laugh and giggle here with you!"

Thank you to our member Jane for leading this fun program with puppets and stories borrowed from the Greater Victoria Public Library

Congratulations to the lucky winners of this month's books! Please join us again for a free drop-in storytime and Scholastic book prize draw at at Chapters Victoria on Wednesday, October 16th from 10-10:30 am. Everyone welcome!

"Let It Shine" at momstown Victoria Scholastic sponsored Tales for Tots

momstown Victoria moms and kids enjoyed the book "Let It Shine," by Maryann Cocca-Leffler, at this month's Scholastic sponsored Tales for Tots at Chapters Victoria! Bring on the summer with this joyfully illustrated soft-cover book, which follows the adventures of a group of children and their parents as they enjoy their summer vacation!

Our momstown curriculum theme this month is the desert, so we chose a cactus-making craft that is easy and fun for all ages! Simply take green clay or fun dough and shape it into a cactus. Next, break uncooked spaghetti pasta into short pieces, and stick them into your cactus to make it spiny. And voilĂ , instant cactus! We also used sandpaper as the base of our craft, and the kids loved to feel its rough texture!

Next month's Scholastic sponsored Tales for Tots is on Wednesday, August 21st, from 10-11 am at Chapters Victoria! Part counting book, part guessing game, and a book about vehicles, this book combines some very popular preschool interests and concepts!

Our momstown curriculum theme this month is all about shapes, so we helped our toddlers and preschool kids make pictures using foam cut-out shapes, scissors and glue.

Wet, Wet, Wet! Making Glitter Bottles and Reading "Split! Splat!" at Scholastic Tales for Tots

In celebration of our "Wet, wet, wet!" theme this month, momstown Victoria shared the book "Split! Splat!" by Amy Gibson at Tales for Tots sponsored by Scholastic Canada! Put the umbrella away and take off your galoshes; it's time to sing, dance and squish in the mud with a little girl and her dog! Amy Gibson's fun poem is brought to life by New York Times bestselling illustrator Steve Bjorkman.

Glitter bottles are a wonderful sensory craft for kids and toddlers! All you need is a small plastic water bottle, water, glitter, and sensory objects of different weight and texture. We used glitter, sparkly pompoms, sequins and foam stickers, and you can add heavier objects like dice and beads to make a rattle sound.

Make your own Glitter Bottle!
  1. Fill the bottle only half full of water.
  2. Add the glitter (recommended that the adult does this part.)
  3. Add sparkly pompoms, sequins, stickers and other items to the bottle.
  4. Top off with water.
  5. Seal with hot glue or duct tape.

Ta da! Simply swirl and shake it to experience the magic of a glitter bottle!

Our Tales for Tots program event is open to the public and hosted downtown at Chapters Victoria from 10-11 am on the 3rd Wednesday of every month! Bring your coffee and meet us downstairs in the children's area for a craft, storytime and a chance to WIN our Scholastic book of the month!

momstown Victoria Scholastic Baby Book Club: Alligator Baby by Robert Munsch

Kristen's mom and dad got lost on the way to the hospital and ended up at the zoo! They bring home a baby that is not Kristen's baby brother. After a few more baby mix-ups, Kristen decides to go to the zoo herself and find her real baby brother to bring home.

"Alligator Baby" by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Michael Martchenko is a hilarious board book that my own toddler, preschooler and school-age kid all love. momstown Victoria Book Club Enjoys "The False Prince" by Jennifer Nielsen

Our momstown Victoria moms were delighted to have our book club sponsored by Scholastic Canada in March and to receive eight copies of "The False Prince" by Jennifer Nielsen to read and discuss.

The novel centres around a defiant but noble young character named Sage. He is one of four teenage orphans chosen by a nobleman named Connor, who plans to use only one of the orphans in an evil plot to impersonate the king's son and prevent a civil war. If Sage is not chosen, he will be killed, and his rivals are equally at risk. Sage must use his cleverness and trust no one in order to survive. Layer upon layer of treachery is revealed, until finally the truth places Sage in the most dangerous situation of all.

Here is what our Victoria moms said about "The False Prince":

"I found it captivating as soon as I opened the book."  We all agreed that both the plot and the character of Sage were intriguing, and that once started, the book was hard to put down.

"I honestly felt that it could have been written as an adult novel." Despite the treachery and murder in the plot, the adventure is accessible to most reading ages. We agreed that adult-oriented content could have been added, but that the novel was entertaining enough on its own.

"It was a little predictable, but as a young teenager this is exactly the sort of novel I would have read." Even though we were all able to figure out the final layer of truth before it was revealed, that did not detract from our enjoyment of reading it all the way through. All of the moms agreed that we would be interested in reading the rest of the trilogy to find out what happens to Sage.

Thank you Scholastic Canada for a fun read, and we look forward to reading the next installment of the Ascendance Trilogy by Jennifer Nielsen: "The Runaway King." The book we're reading this month is "Streetsweeper" by Elliot Perlman. Our moms' night out events are just another great reason to join momstown Victoria!
