Jr. Sportball Class with momstown Victoria

momstown Victoria parents and kids had an awesome time playing sports and creative games at our outdoor Junior Sportball class! Our kids and toddlers stayed active and engaged with Coach Claudia as they played games that kept them running, chasing, kicking, throwing, and much more.

This 45-minute program is the perfect introduction to Sportball. Children and parents explore different sport skills through creative games, and in a full length program, children would be introduced to a different sport each week. Parents are encouraged to participate and challenge their kids according to their skill level, teaching parents new skills in introducing sports to their kids as well.

Warming up with "Coach Claudia Says."

Launching our ball rockets.

3-2-1 blast off!

Coach Claudia gets a hula hoop bracelet.

Pushing a butterfly through the window.

Bear walking through the jungle.

Hopping towards the mud.

We're #1! Thank you, Sportball!

Thank you to Coach Claudia and Sportball Victoria for this fun and awesome experience! For more information on Sportball programs for ages 16 months to 5 years and beyond, check out www.sportball.ca.

Hockey, soccer, tennis, baseball, basketball, volleyball, golf and football

Parents and caregivers can have a direct hand in a preschooler’s development through a range of Multi-Sport programs. Sportball Junior, Parent & Child and Me & My Dad programs teach children important introductory physical skills and help them develop confidence in their abilities. The programs also help adults understand proven teaching techniques that can be applied outside of Sportball classes. Classes focus on refining, rehearsing and repeating skills and playing games in a fun, creative, non-competitive environment. Classes are conducted once a week in 45-minute sessions – just the right length of time for active little minds and bodies.

momstown Victoria Junior Chef: Vegan Chocolate Cupcakes

momstown.ca is celebrating its 6th birthday this month, so at this month's Junior Chef program, momstown Victoria moms and kids made these delicious egg and dairy-free chocolate cupcakes! I love doing this recipe with my kids because it only needs one bowl (or try mixing it right in an 8 x 8-inch cake pan instead of cupcakes!) And because it's egg-free, I can let the kids lick the spoon!

Ultra Easy Vegan Chocolate Cupcakes

Whisk together in a large bowl:
1 ½ cups flour
1 cup sugar*
¼ cup nonalkalized cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt

Add:
1 cup water
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla

Stir with a rubber spatula just until smooth. Fill 12 muffin cups. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the cakey part of a cupcake comes out clean, about 20 minutes. Remove from the pan and let cool completely on a rack before frosting or sprinkling with powdered sugar.

Variations:

Chocolate Raspberry Cupcakes - very similar recipe, uses soymilk and substitutes balsamic vinegar instead of regular vinegar. Also adds in 3/4 cup frozen or fresh raspberries and 1/3 cup chocolate chips!

Black Bottom Cupcakes - makes 18 cupcakes instead of 12. In a separate bowl, cream together: 1 8-oz package of cream cheese, 1 egg, 1/3 cup sugar and
1 cup chocolate chips. Fill each muffin cup halfway, and top with a tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture. Bake 20-25 minutes and let cool completely.

*Is white sugar vegan? Most white sugar from sugarcane goes through a purification process where it is filtered through bone charcoal (animal origin,) so some vegans avoid it. For a true vegan recipe, simply substitute another sweetener and it will be just as good! :)

momstown Discovery Field Trip to Miniature World

momstown Victoria moms and kids had enormous fun on our Discovery Field Trip to Miniature World! This classic Victoria attraction is nicknamed "The Greatest Little Show on Earth," and kids, adults, locals and tourists alike have enjoyed seeing and returning to the Miniature World exhibit for over 40 years.

Our moms and kids were immediately greeted by the friendly staff, and then we entered a miniaturized world in which our little ones felt like giants! There were over 85 imaginative and historical dioramas to explore, and many buttons for our toddlers to push that moved trains or spun propellers. It took about 45 minutes to an hour to do a self-guided tour through the exhibit, and there still seemed much more left to read and discover for next time.

Join us at next month's Discovery Field Trip to East Sooke Regional Park at Aylward Farm! We'll be exploring tide pools and doing a dinosaur dig in the sand. A 1-year membership with momstown.ca is only $45/year and includes all of our monthly programs and events, plus a BONUS 1-year subscription to Today's Parent Magazine! "Let It Shine" at momstown Victoria Scholastic sponsored Tales for Tots

momstown Victoria moms and kids enjoyed the book "Let It Shine," by Maryann Cocca-Leffler, at this month's Scholastic sponsored Tales for Tots at Chapters Victoria! Bring on the summer with this joyfully illustrated soft-cover book, which follows the adventures of a group of children and their parents as they enjoy their summer vacation!

Our momstown curriculum theme this month is the desert, so we chose a cactus-making craft that is easy and fun for all ages! Simply take green clay or fun dough and shape it into a cactus. Next, break uncooked spaghetti pasta into short pieces, and stick them into your cactus to make it spiny. And voilà, instant cactus! We also used sandpaper as the base of our craft, and the kids loved to feel its rough texture!

Next month's Scholastic sponsored Tales for Tots is on Wednesday, August 21st, from 10-11 am at Chapters Victoria! Buy a coffee upstairs at Starbucks and then enjoy a free story time, craft and book prize draw while you connect with other great moms in the children's area. Congratulations to this month's lucky winners!

For a limited time only, our low membership fee of $45/year comes with an added bonus 1-year subscription to Today's Parent magazine! momstown coordinates over 20 monthly events in order to support and connect moms LIKE YOU! So what are you waiting for??? Join momstown today!!!

Tie-Dyeing with Tropicana Tropics at Picassos in the Park

momstown Victoria hosted a fun and free Picassos in the Park event with Tropicana Tropics  juice at Centennial Park in Langford! Victoria moms, dads and kids tried all four Tropics varieties, which are made with 100% juice and puree blends and contain no added sugar. The parents were happy that each 250 ml cup of Tropics juice provided two full servings of fruit, and the kids were happy that they could sample as much juice as they pleased! And we all loved the exotic flavours and refreshing drinks on a hot summer's day.

After hydrating themselves at the juice station, the moms, dads and our little Picasso's then got busy creating their own uniquely designed clothing by tie-dyeing! They learned some basic tie-dyeing tips and techniques, but there is really no wrong way to tie-dye! Tie-dyeing is a fun and easy craft to do with kids, and the kids are so proud to wear their art all summer long.

If you tie-dyed something at the event, we would love to see the results! Send us a picture or post it on facebook and tag "momstown Victoria!" The first 3 people to send or post pictures will receive a free coupon for a Tropicana juice!

After the craft, the kids enjoyed the great playground and splash pad at the newly upgraded Centennial Park in the City of Langford. Thank you Tropicana for getting the juices and creative juices flowing at our Tropics-inspired Picassos in the Park event for Victoria moms, dads and kids! You can find out more info about Tropics juice blends on the Tropicana website
